The Three Little Pigs Luxury Cottage – Dorset

One of my New Years Resolutions was to go away on more mini breaks. I do love a 2 week get away but I find these short weekends make such fabulous memories for the kids. This weekend we did exactly that and drove down (while having an in car sing song) to Milton Abbas in Dorset. We stayed with friends at the stunning Three Little Pigs Luxury Cottage which is a 2.5 hour drive from London.

The hosts Steph and Harold made us feel so welcome before we even arrived sending us all the cottage details and any further information on the area we could have wished for.

The cottage is situated on a very picturesque street with thatched cottages on either side, a church and a fab pub (which of course we tried!).

When we arrived we were taken aback with how stunning this  grade II listed property is, it was built in 1770 and the owners have added an attractive extension to the back which offers huge entertaining space. The interior design was perfect with every detail thought out even down to the loo roll holders! We have taken some ideas away with us, we even messaged Steph to ask her how they built the wine wall! The owners even organise a welcome hamper with locally sourced bread, eggs, cheese, shortbread biscuits, jam, cereal (Dorset of course!) which is a lovely touch and very handy for the first morning. There is also a cupboard full of tea and a Nespresso machine! If you would like to cook your own meals and pick up some essentials there is a Tesco’s around 10 mins away by car.

What to eat

A few doors up from the cottage is a Pub called the Hambro Arms, we had a lovely meal here on the Saturday night, the food and service were fab. I also forgot how much cheaper the drinks would be compared to London prices!

We booked the recommended chef Steve James Ltd on the Friday night, he was already prepping when we arrived, walking into the smell of what he was preparing was a great start to the weekend! It was such a treat to sit down to this on the first evening and the food was incredible. This would be something we would definitely book again on future visits. Steve is extremely helpful and will email over some menu options for you to select before you arrive. He covers Somerset and Dorset. Three courses are £48 and we went for Pumpkin, Squash and Ameretti ravioli, Beer braised Pig Cheeks followed by Blackberry and apple tarte tartin….

The Cottage

The cottage has 3 double bedrooms, two upstairs which share a large family bathroom with a shower and bath then a further bedroom downstairs with an ensuite  shower room. The bedding is pure luxury, I struggled to get up in the mornings! There is a cosy living room with a log fire which I was in charge of for the weekend. I love a real fire and wish I had one at home. There is also a large office with another fireplace, a reading corner and a nook for the kids with a cupboard full of toys and a wii which kept our lot entertained on the rainy day.

If you are thinking of staying here with little ones you will be pleased to know that the owners have thought of everything, stair gates, intercoms, bath toys, high chair, travel cot, blender, steamer, swings in the garden! You name it, they have it covered!

The Garden

The garden has been well thought out. It is quite steep with steps leading to each area but there are also stair gates here so little ones are safe. There are two swings at the back of the garden, lots of seating dotted around and pigs (not real ones!) all over the place.  I would love to come back and visit in the summer and make full use of it and the outdoor dining areas.

Things to do

We had two days to explore and unfortunately the Saturday was rained off so we spent most of it in front of the fire playing board games and watching movies. The house has Netflix and wifi (essentials!) The Sunday was gloriously sunny so we drove around 25 minutes to Lulworth Cove, if you haven’t been before then it is a must, absolutely breathtakingly beautiful! There is a lot of steep hills involved so it wouldn’t be suitable for buggies or wheelchairs but the view from the top is just as impressive with Durdle Door as the backdrop. We burnt our weekend calories and headed straight down to the beach where the kids skimmed stones and ran off some energy. The walk up is killer, just a warning!

Other fun attractions nearby: Peppa Pig World, Monkey World, Steeptonbill Farm, The Tank Museum, Lulworth Castle and lots of areas of natural beauty. You could stay a week and easily be entertained each day.
